The Ford F150 is a full-sized pickup truck, first introduced in 1980. It was one of the best selling pickup trucks in United States for more than 23 years.
First Generation (1980-1986)
The first generation Ford F-150 model was offered in both two-door and 4-door pickup truck variants. The pickup truck released in this generation had flat and sharp panels and it had a squarer look.
The standard engines to the model were 4.9 liter I-6, 4.2L V8, 5.0L V8, 5.8L V8, 6.6L V8 and 7.5L V8 versions. The sole transmission available to all the engines was 4-speed automatic. Four trim levels were offered for 1980, the base model XL, XLS, XLT and up-level XLT Lariat.
Second Generation (1987-1991)
The Ford F-150 was completely redesigned in 1987 and the design of the model in this generation was more streamlined. It was the first model to feature rear antilock brakes. Engine options remain same as that of in the previous generation.
Third Generation (1992-2004)
The pickup truck was again redesigned completely in 1992 and it received a new dashboard and new aerodynamic looking front end.
Slight changes were made in 1997, and in 2000. New features in the model were power driver’s seat, CHMSL third brake light, compact disc player, driver side air bags, and electro chromic inside rear view mirror. The sales of the F-150 model had overtaken the combined GMC and Chevrolet pickup sales.
Fourth Generation (2005-Present)
The Ford F-150 is redesigned, gaining numerous new features, passenger room, power and cargo room. The major competitors to the Ford F-150 include Dodge Ram 1500, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado and Toyota Tundra.
The key features that attract potential customers towards the current generation Ford F-150 pickup truck are its passenger and cargo room and towing capability. On the other hand, it has low fuel economy rates than the other models in its class.
The standard engine to the model include a 4.6 liter SOHC V8 version that delivers power up to 248 hp at 4750 rpm and torque of 294 lb ft at 4000 rpm. The other engine available to the model is a 5.4 liter SOHC V8 that produces 310 hp of power at 5000 rpm and torque of 365 lb ft at 3500 rpm. Available transmissions to the engines include 4-speed and 6-speed automatic.
